Summer is the time of year in Vermont where cooling systems handle the biggest loads. In other parts of the country that stay warm throughout the year, it’s easier for HVAC systems to stay top of mind. But here in Vermont, it’s just as important to prepare and maintain your HVAC system in summer as it is in winter. Here are 4 tips for Vermont HVAC maintenance in Vermont this summer:
1. Tune it Up
It may not seem like much, but it is important to have your system tuned up by an HVAC professional at the beginning of the season. After a rough winter of almost non-stop heating and depending on the type of system you have, it has probably gathered dust and debris that needs to be cleared away. Improper cleaning and maintenance can lead to damage, and while you can most likely change the air filter and clean the coils on your own, there are tasks that should only be handled by a professional. An HVAC company can check your whole system and fix any potential problems before they get worse.
2. Change the Air Filter
This is one of the simplest, yet most important, HVAC maintenance tasks you can perform, and help ensure that your system runs smoothly throughout the summer. Air filters help keep the components of your HVAC system clean and in turn prevents breakdowns. You should get in the habit of checking the air filter monthly and replacing it when you notice dirt.
3. Keep a Consistent Temperature
As much as possible, find a comfortable temperature and then leave the thermostat alone. Adjusting the thermostat too frequently throughout the day is inefficient and puts undue stress on the system. One misconception about cooling systems is that if you set your desired temperature lower, the area will cool off faster, but that’s not usually the case. Another way to reduce pressure on the system is to lower the temperature a few degrees when the building will be unoccupied.
4. Don’t Set Your Sights Too Low
Cooling systems have limits, and pushing those limits can cause problems. Setting your desired temperature too low may actually be unattainable for your system, causing it to constantly run. A system that is running continuously will cause stress for your equipment. It can also freeze components of the system and restrict airflow, reducing efficiency even further. The best way to increase the efficiency of your air conditioner is keep the system and the surrounding area clean and keep the vents clear. Maintaining your HVAC system in Vermont is important year-round, but in the summer months it’s especially important for keeping you comfortable. Keeping up with your HVAC maintenance in the summer will help your system run smoothly and efficiently year-round.
